The mural photograph captured the first mail delivery to Miller Grocery and Rockaway Post Office. Ida Miller wrote on the back, "1911. Mail was 40 days late. Brought by stage, horseback, and afoot by way of Grand Ronde".
Photo postcards play an important role in documenting history, serving as a visual "social media" filling a gap left by limited newspaper photography. Beginning in 1903, anyone could turn a photo into a postcard using a Kodak postcard camera.
In the next block, you'll find Grumpy's, the oldest surviving structure in Rockaway. Though the building itself was constructed in 1934, its story reaches much further back; its upper level is a repurposed cabin from Rockaway's earliest days. The past quite literally sits atop the present here.
Nearly a century after the old cabin was first built, Grumpy's continues the café tradition started by Flo's Alpiner and Bennett's Café, welcoming locals and travelers alike; a gathering spot layered with stories in every board and beam.
