1934 Fire

This block housed "Alpha," the Miller's nickname for their first family home and grocery built in 1910. Once new land claim families arrived, they sold to Jasmann and Schloth in 1913 after building an identical home and grocery store further north. This was the principal business section; the block was bustling with Rockaway Mercantile Co, Newell Olson's Barber Shop, Cameron Beauty Parlor, Eid's Pharmacy, Chico Café and Hotel, Rockaway Garage, and Jenkins Bakery.  ​

… until the 1934 fire, when an alarm sounded, and the Rockaway fire department responded to Jenkins Bakery. They were aided by Bay City, Garibaldi, Wheeler, and Tillamook, but an insufficient water supply handicapped the Firemen. Water was pumped from the natatorium, helping prevent the blaze from reaching several cottages. ​

Following the fire, William Monk rebuilt with three brick storefronts as you see today. Frank Miller Jr's I.G.A. Grocery was housed at Rick's Roadhouse, continuing the Millers' commitment to Rockaway. Other popular gathering places over the years included The Cowbell Café, Rockaway Drug and Fountain, and The Beachcomber.
