"The Nat"

Built in 1925

"The Nat" was built in 1925. Standing two stories tall, the Natatorium hummed with sounds of laughter and locals at the bowling lanes in the center of town. Today, this is the Ocean's Edge Wayside and Visitor Center Caboose.

Inside the Natatorium, visitors and locals were greeted by a massive 50' x 80' swimming pool and fountain. The water source? None other than the magnificent Pacific Ocean.

Guests could get a "beach check," go to the ocean or out for lunch, and return to finish the all-day swim until 10 PM. On the second floor, there was a bowling alley adjoining a spectator section for watching the swimmers and divers.

Over its 40 years, the Nat's second floor was converted from spectator seating and bowling lanes to a recreation center with billiard tables, malt shake bar, and music for dancing. "The Panorama Room" nightclub hosted luncheons, fashion shows, and events.

The Depression era marked a shift from the rapid development of the 1920's to a period of stabilization and hardship on the Oregon Coast. Mills, mines, and factories closed across the region, yet the coast remained a place for recreation.

Outdoor activities were inexpensive and accessible; movies and music were escapist. The Dance Pavilions and their Big Bands boosted morale. As a result, the Natatorium served as a vital community hub, providing recreation, entertainment, social connections, and employment until it closed in 1967.

In 1976, the Natatorium was demolished due to exposure to the harsh coastal elements and a lack of upkeep. Below the surface of the Wayside parking lot remains the original natatorium pool.
