Butcher Shop
In the 1920s and 1930s, this building was home to Bert Reynolds’ butcher shop, a place where neighbors traded news while picking up their Sunday roasts, and where the familiar sound of the screen door creaking open was part of daily life in Rockaway.
In 1935, the Trebelhorn family returned to town and opened a bakery in the same space. The smell of fresh bread and warm pastries drifted out onto the street, drawing in both locals and travelers passing through.
After the bakery years, the building found a new identity. From 1949 to 1957, May White ran May’s Beauty Shop, offering hair sets, trims, and the kind of friendly chatter that makes a beauty parlor as much a gathering place as a business. Then, beginning in 1958, Wilma Shipley took over and renamed it Charm Aide Beauty Shop. She worked here until 1969, when the shop passed to Muyrphy (Olson) Lord, continuing the tradition of beauty and community under the same roof.
In 1975, the building changed hands once again. Albin Bean purchased it, and Mike and Sally Vanebo remodeled the space into a bookstore, quiet shelves replacing barber chairs and ovens, but still serving as a welcoming place to spend an afternoon.
From butcher block to bakery counter, from salon chairs to bookshelves, this little building has always opened its doors to the people of Rockaway, one chapter after another.
Years passed, but the building never stopped evolving. And today, it has come full circle. Once again, the scent of fresh baking drifts out onto the street. The Schroader family has lovingly returned the space to its roots as a family-owned, small-town bakery, now known as the Beach Bakeshop.
